Frankie and Benny’s – 23rd October 2017

It’s my mission to review the onion rings in every chain restaurant in the UK that sells them…. I never have high hopes for quality though.

Number of Rings: 8
Cost: £3.45
Cost per ring: 43p

I find that often in chain restaurants the onion rings are dry or soggy and usually from frozen, (Chiquitos and Garfunkel’s I’m looking at you), so I was expecting a very plain mediocre onion ring from Frankie & Benny’s. To my surprise, the waitress said these rings were spicy when I ordered them so I hoped they had raised the bar.

Were they spicy?

Yes, mildly spicy.

Were they mediocre?

Yes, as expected.

The rings were for sure from frozen which I think is such a cheek when they are charging you £3.45 for a portion that probably cost them about 40p MAX.

As frozen rings go I’d say they were slimy yet satisfying. I usually give the bog standard frozens a 3/10 but I’m going to boost the score for the novelty of the light spice. They were standard stodgy rings with a twist.

The texture was totally soft with zero crunch, I was disappointed. They were plain slimy although they didn’t cross the line of too greasy. You win some you lose some.

Slimy, spicy, frozen rings.

Auld Hundred, Edinburgh – 27th August 2017

So excited to have visited the Fringe Festival for the first time. I went with my friends Charlotte, Issy and Rhianna and the four of us just had the most fantastic time. Cool bars, hilarious comedy, great company.. but how was Edinburgh’s onion ring game?

Number of Rings: 7
Cost: £2.59
Cost per ring: 37p

The pub was pleasant and it suited exactly what we needed, a speedy service of good food between shows. However the onion rings were sadly that familiar from frozen taste.

However I’m not sure if the rings were actually from frozen like a classic pub onion ring but they tasted run of the mill for sure. Again, perhaps they are from frozen but deep fried? This always confuses the tastebuds…

The texture was good, not too stodgy, and the grease levels were spot on. The batter was nice and crispy and this was complemented exactly as you’d hope with juicy inner onions.

Perfectly ordinary rings.

Cabana at the O2 – 19th July 2017

THE most anticipated night of the year. We went to go and see Blink-182 at the O2 Arena and before it started I went to Cubana to sample their onion rings.

Number of Rings: 6
Cost: £3.95
Cost per ring: 66p

I was excited to try these onion rings because the menu calls them Churrasco Onion Rings. A quick google search told me that Churrasco is a Portuguese word for grilled beef and can also refer to barbecue in general. So I was expecting some kind of meaty/BBQy feast.

Sadly I was disappointed. They were not special.

A powdered herb mix was sprinkled on top of the dish which was very nice. I suppose this is what they do to them to justify calling them “Churrasco”. Sadly, the seasoning did not coat all of the onion rings only the top ones and it left me wanting.

My initial thoughts were that these rings tasted very familiar which is a red flag sign that usually means that these are cooked from frozen. (Am I just eating the same brand of gross rings over and over??)

The classic onion ring dilemma occurred when I bit in, the whole slimy onion slid out.. a tell tell sign of frozen rings. What a shame. Considering the cost per ring is higher than average I think this is pretty cheeky.

The batter was pretty dry but the onion itself was very juicy which averaged it out to a good level of juicy. Although the batter was nice and salty, you could tell something was lacking. Still they weren’t unpleasant in the slightest but they were certainly nothing noteworthy.

As you can see I still had a good time.

Frozen rings with herbs on. Fine.

Henry’s Kitchen (Hampton Court) – 8th July 2017

A meal after a 13 hour bar work shift was always going to have a lot to live up to.

Number of Rings: 7
Cost: £3.35
Cost per ring: 48p

They were served in a mini chip basket to make them look fancy but they were not.

I don’t have much to say other than they were Bog Standard Frozen onion rings and were pretty dry on top of that. The onion was their only redeeming factor but did not do enough to save them.

Dry frozen rings in disguise.

Vodka Revolution – 7th February 2017

Nothing says I’m a true friend like buying delicious snacks to share when you are out drinking with your mates but are Vodka Rev’s up to scratch?

Number of Rings: 7
Cost: £2.75
Cost per ring: 39p

Wow firstly these rings are so cheap, but you only get seven onion rings not the standard eight ring portion that I have come to expect plus one of them was on the small side so that was even more disappointing.

I think these rings are from frozen but they were well cooked and perhaps the premium end of the frozen ring scale. They didn’t taste very strong, the batter was plain and the onion also wasn’t very flavoursome.   You can see a huge gap between the onion and the batter.

I will say the texture of the batter was good though as despite its bland taste the onion was pretty juicy. The crispiness of the batter was fine, not amazing but fine.

I’d buy these again if I really wanted onion rings but they aren’t anything special.

These are perfectly mediocre. Good for a boozy snack.

Honest Burgers Brixton – 1st October 2016

My boyfriend and I were going to a housewarming in Brixton and I took him to Honest Burger so I could try these onion rings. I’d seen them on Instagram before so I knew they looked good.

Number of Rings: 5
Cost: Came as a side (Usually £3.50)

I was very happy when they offered to replace my fries with the onion rings at no extra cost and looking around the restaurant, lots of people were making the swap. Sadly I fear many regrets were had that evening.

Although they do look great and that’s because they were freshly cooked for sure… But sadly they were totally bland.

I couldn’t believe they’d left the kitchen tasting like they did. They were so plain they couldn’t have flavoured them at all. I’ll tell you what they tasted like, McDonalds chicken nugget batter. Grim but true.

Upset by these mediocre rings, and my lack of rosemary chips due to the swap, I tried to rescue my dinner by adding salt. Honest burger clearly think no added salt is necessary as I had to be asked for some to be brought to the table. They were right though, my efforts were futile.. salt didn’t help.

On the plus side I’d say the texture was spot on. They were wonderfully crunchy with perfect grease levels.

Very plain, freshly cooked & crispy onion rings that desperately need a sauce.

Chiquitos – 18th June 2016

I love Mexican food. I went to Chiquitos because sometime you just need a burrito to be made for you. Luckily for me they have a Tex-Mex section of the menu which inevitably meant I was having onion rings.

Number of Rings: 10 (small)
Cost: £3.95
Cost per Ring: 40p

These rings are from frozen.  The biggest give away was that they were all the same size and shape. Just like The Bog Standard Frozen often is, these were quite peppery in taste presumably to cover the bad taste of the batter which was very doughy.

The onion was distinctly slimy and not juicy as you can see from this photo above. I bit into it and the slimy onion flopped out. It looks pretty gross to be honest.

The serving had many smaller rings which is good for sharing but it meant that the batter to onion ratio of the entire portion was slightly too high. It did come with a delicious sauce however, it was very spicy and tasted almost like Marie Rose sauce which you usually get with a prawn cocktail. I’m really interested in finding the perfect onion ring condiment and I’m happy to say the pairing worked really well here.
